Boy in Blue

This guy just loves to be outside-- no matter the weather. He picked out a new pair of rain boots today (Pirates) and is obsessed with them. He didn't nap today, but played in his crib, singing and talking about new boots. The first thing he did when he came downstairs from his nap was to find the boots and ask for "locks" (socks)... He's remembering how fun it is to splash in the puddles (now that we've had some rain). These pictures are pre-new boots, but doing two of his favorite outdoors activities: blowing bubbles and playing with a ball.

In a health-related note, we've started Ben on the daily inhaled steroids as (hopefully) a prevention to getting pneumonia again as the season comes at us. He's been doing great with the nebulizer and doesn't fuss too much when it's time for a 'treatment'. We have mixed feelings about going this route with a daily medication, but the asthma educator and B's pediatrician are definitely supportive of it. And, of course, we don't want him to get sick again, so we're willing to comply.

Follow-up appointment with pediatrician

Ben had a follow-up today, which went well. His O2 level was 97, respiratory rate was 35 (which is still a little high), and ear infections were cleared up. He still has a productive cough, and we've got another day on the steroids and Albuterol nebulizer every six hours (though we've yet to wake him up at night to give him any treatments). We got referrals for both a certified asthma educator as well as an allergist. Now we just have to line up appointments with them to see what the best path is. Ben's pediatrician suggested an inhaled steroid for the fall/winter, but we're holding off on that for now to see if things clear up on their own. We're anxious to meet with some other experts to see what their thoughts are, but in the meantime Ben is pretty healthy and happy and playful...

Comments

I have "re-enabled" the comments feature here, with some fancy add-ons that allow me to filter the ones that I don't want to post (ah, modern technology is wonderful). So feel free to drop a comment so we can be happily encouraged to keep posting. :) Thanks to all those warm thoughts that have been sent our way- it's been much appreciated.

Ah, beautiful sleep...

I'm feeling much more rested today, as are the rest of my family members. Our energetic boy struggled with settling down last night, though he finally did. He'd been used to sleeping with Mumma the past few nights, so the concept of being left alone in his own bed must not have been much to his liking. Though I must say, he didn't protest much and fell asleep around 8pm. I was convinced I'd be up with him throughout the night so I went to bed shortly after. I didn't hear a peep until 6:45 this morning! It was a little disconcerting that he wasn't coughing during the night, but he certainly needed to rest and catch up on his sleep, as we all did/do. Phew!

a few more pics

At Barbara Bush-- once Ben started feeling better, he wanted down from the bed and to PLAY will all the very cool stuff they have there. Trucks and trains and books and movies-- quite a fun place. When we got home this afternoon I asked Ben if he was happy to be home & he said "no". I asked if he wanted to go back to the hospital he said "yes"... Yeah, I don't think so.
Somewhere along the hospital stay, Ben stopped calling Jay "Dada" and moved on to "Daddy". It sounds like Dad-eeeeeeeee.
The last picture is of a tired boy finally in the car on the way home. Since being home his energy level has doubled and he's bouncing off the walls. We're not sure how much of that is because he just feels better, and how much could be due to the medication. Whichever way, it's so nice to have him back..
Please, everyone send us good SLEEPING thoughts tonight- Ben is used to having Mumma right next to him all night long, so transition back to his own bed might be challenging. Can you tell I'm consumed by thoughts of sleep? I can't wait and hope, so much, that it's successful and rejuvinating!

At Maine Med

Here's the boy in his hospital room. The quilt was given to us (it's a Project Linus quilt: http://www.projectlinus.org/) as we were wheeled down to X-Ray. The contraption on his arm is called a "No-No" and is to cover his IV site so he wouldn't mess with it and also so he wouldn't bend his arm. He fell in love with his No-No and pointed it out people, telling them what it was. He didn't like having it taken off. And a picture in his "Johnny" saying "cheese" for the camera. This is the first time he asked to get 'down' from his bed and explore...

Pictures from our Hospital Adventures

This was taken at CMMC upon arriving. The pediatrician sent us as a direct admission, so we got settled and Ben got some breathing treatments right away.

The next morning, after a very rough night. This was when we were waiting for the ambulance from Barbara Bush Pediatric Hospital to pick him up. Probably just about the sickest we saw him during the past few days. Very scary...

We caught a glimpse of Ben on the gurney surrounded by his crew arriving at Maine Med. As I mentioned, Ben was giving high-fives so that put smiles on our faces... It was nice to see that, especially after being told I couldn't ride in the ambulance with him.

Discharge pending... :)

It looks as though Benjamin will be discharged later this morning, after doing better last night, despite a couple of episodes of low blood-oxygen levels. He had a nebulizer treatment around 10pm and following that his O2 levels dipped slightly. The RN and I woke him up and made him angry enough to cry and cough and move the junk around, causing O2 levels to rise again. He slept a bit better last night and am hoping he'll do even better once we get home and to his own bed. I know I can't wait for some time in my own bed!!! I haven't slept more than a few hours at a time in 6 days, so I'm hoping for some much-needed rest.

In lieu of having an official diagnosis of asthma, we've been cautioned to be diligent in keeping Ben's environment as free as possible from cold viruses and other bugs. That said, we'll probably be checking with everyone on their state of health prior to visits... Unfortunately the cold season is coming, so hopefully we can all (you all too!) be safe and healthy.

Thanks again for all the thoughts and emails and messages. It's nice to know you're thinking about us. Next time we post, I'm hoping it will be from the comfort of our own home...

Hello from Barbara Bush Pediatriac Hospital at Maine Med

Sorry no photos this post- they will come in the near future. We're writing from Maine Medical Center in Portland where Benjamin was admitted yesterday. He started the week of with cold-like symptoms that progressed to some concerning coughing and general yuckiness. After 2 visits to the pediatrician, Ben was admitted to Central Maine Medical Center on Thursday. After a rough night there, he woke up with a fever, low blood oxygen levels and a rapid heartrate. An X-Ray showed some 'junk' in his middle right lung. That, along with his stuggle to get good breath, caused the hospitalist there to send Ben to Barbara Bush via transport in an ICU ambulance with 5 crew members (respitory therapist, 2 docs, an RN, and an EMT). Unfortunately, I wasn't allowed to ride with him, but we made it to Portland first and actually saw the ambulance arrive with him. Upon being pulled out of the ambulance on his gurney, we saw him giving high fives to the crew, so it couldn't have been too traumatic of a drive.

And here we are at Maine Med. Ben has been on oxygen and an IV for fluids since we arrived yesterday. Some medications including the usual Ibuprofen and Tylenol, as well as an Abuterol nebulizer every 4-6 hours, antibiotics, and a recent start on some steroids. It was quite scary to see him stuggle so hard to get breaths, and struggle to keep his eyes open (he was lathargic and dopey, and you could just tell in his eyes that he wasn't feeling well at all). Blood tests didn't reveal anything too out of the ordinary, and x-rays showed some 'thing', but a 'large foreign body' was ruled out. He has the diagnosis of viral pneumonia and we're going to have to further some investigating and testing to see if he's struggling with asthma. There's a lot of question marks around that...

We were able to take his oxygen off at 6pm last night, and his O2 levels are hanging in, so that's great. His IV was just unhooked since he's started to drink and eat a few bites this afternoon. He slept a bit better last night than he has since Monday, so it's nice to see him more well-rested. He woke up using a lot more language this morning, and he's been playing well today. In fact, he doesn't want to hang out in bed anymore-- there's a great playroom with every toy imaginable here, so he's in heaven.

As it stands, Ben will likely be discharged in the morning (Sunday) after 3 nights in the hospital. It's been a wild ride-- never thought we'd have to send our baby off in an ambulance with five critial care medial professionals. Talk about scary. We're more relaxed today and hope that we can figure out how to keep this from happening in the future.

Thanks to all who sent good thoughts, and apologies to those that we haven't had a chance to call yet-- as you can imagine, we've been a bit preoccupied. Happily hoping to be home and healthy tomorrow. (The staff here is talking about stealing Ben in the night because he's 'just the cutest'-- wonder how many kiddos they say that about... We think it's true though! :).

Benjamin & his friends

Maci pulling Ben and Clara-- she wanted NO help...

Ben and Emma in the play tent:

Ben loved Parker & kept wanting to hug her. He hasn't had much exposure to kiddos younger than him, so he was pretty interested in the pretty baby girl!

Ben pushing Henry in the truck (Maci is looking on to make sure it's being done right!) :)

Summer

He knows how to relax. After he cleans off his book & puzzle shelves, he likes to sit and ponder his work...

Cool dude, wearing Mumma's shades. It was too "bight"...

Nice hat, huh?

Playing with Pops

Ben likes to 'help' -- here he is helping Pops weed the lawn.

Playing the drums on Pops' head.

Now he's just watching Pops do all the work.
At least this work can be done, now that we've had some days with sunshine...

Birthday Boy

Benjamin had a great birthday with his cousins & grandparents! Uncle Matty, Auntie Jess and the girls celebrated with us, along with Grammie & Grampy Simpson, and Nana & Pops Dwyer. We had some nice sunshine (finally), though thunder storms rolled in later in the afternoon. Ben enjoyed all of his gifts (and the food!!!) and the cousins were so fun to play with...

A recent picture of GarageMajal. Jay is working diligently upstairs to finish the floor and the bookcase, so we can start putting in some furniture and toys. It'll be nice to have another space to hang out-- our house feels VERY small these past couple of weeks with all this rain! I hear that we're supposed to get some sun this weekend, which is great. We're having a small birthday party for Jay and Ben tomorrow afternoon, so it'll be nice to be out on the porch and not have to hunker down inside.A day when the sun was actually shining. This is one of the two tomato plants we have that are actually flourishing. Can't wait to taste these toms!

Summer Pics

Ben loves his 'forts' on the couch & tucks all of his trucks underneath to play with...His bruised face! Poor guy was doing "Down Dog" in the driveway and started walking along doing the Bear Walk... He tripped and landed right on his face. It's healed very quickly though.
At Sugarloaf, on a 'walk'.

Sugarloaf in July

We 3 made it up to Sugarloaf for an overnight in July. It was a beautiful (hot) weekend, and we were able to enjoy a couple of walks and some nice time outside. Here is a picture of Ben with the mountain behind him:Here is a view from Ben's bed. Lucky guy, huh???

I couldn't believe how close I got to the bird before it decided to fly. What kind of bird is it?

I'm not rushing Fall or anything, but I love the color of the leaves. This one we came across during a walk through the trails:

Almost 2-- is that possible???

Our boy will be 2 in less than a month-- that seems impossible! Here are a few recent pictures of Benners enjoying his favorite thing: being outside. When he wants to go out, he says "shoes?" That is basically our cue to know he'd like to be outdoors. Ideally (for B), he'll go out naked (his favorite way to be). Naked works for us as well, considering he almost always goes on the potty (or outside) whenever he's naked. If he has to go, he says, "Mumma? Pee!" and we'll run to the potty. Sparing the details, he does VERY well and always gets some applause and a dance. He's doing so well!
Wish Benjamin a happy birthday on August 12th (and Jay on August 10th!!)...

4th of July

My 'Big' Boy... Blowing bubbles for my 'little' boy. We had a beautiful 4th and spent some time outside blowing bubbles (in lieu of fireworks)...

Ben got about this far out of the house, before he realized the pavement was 'hot'. He ran back for his shoes!

Phew, much better with shoes!
Hope everyone had a wonderful 4th & enjoy the weekend!

A morning off together...

Well, it doesn't happen very often that Jay, Ben, and I are all home together for any length of time, but we've managed to have a couple of days together. It's been great! This morning Ben decided to get up at 4:45 (hmmmm....) and so Jay and I took turns napping this morning. When Jay got up, he found Ben and I down on the boat with Grampie Phil, so a dip in the water followed. Ben was reluctant to take his clothes off, so Daddy just went with it-- clothes and all!
Not much explanation needed for the cute onesie. :)
Here's a view of the upstairs of the Garage-majal. We all worked up there this morning, and thought I'd post a picture of the color we chose for the walls.
Also a view of one of the light fixtures (those puppies took a LOT of thinking about before any decisions were made).
